About me
Hi, I’m Dr. Nazo Shamal, a licensed psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience helping individuals navigate life’s challenges. I specialize in treating anxiety, trauma, family conflict, mild to moderate depression, ADHD, acculturation stress, grief and life transitions. I’m here to help you discover clarity, healing, and growth.
Therapy is a collaborative process. We work together to uncover insights, develop coping strategies and build resilience. I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches which include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization reprocessing therapy (EMDR), mindfulness-based therapy, family systems, and parts work. I tailor each session to meet your individual needs. My goal is to create a safe and nonjudgmental space where you can feel heard and supported.

Background and credentials
I hold a doctorate in psychology (PsyD) and a masters in social work (MSW). I am licensed as a clinical social worker (LCSW) in Virginia, District of Columbia (DC), Hawaii and Washington state. I am committed to professional development. I ensure that I bring the most effective, evidence-based practices to our work.

In our sessions, you can expect a warm and empathetic environment. We will work together to identify your goals and address the issues that matter to you most. We will focus on practical tools, enhance self-awareness and develop coping strategies. These efforts aim to help you feel empowered to make meaningful changes in your life. My approach is client-centered, and your pace and comfort level are my top priorities.
Why I Became a Therapist
I became a therapist because I am passionate about helping others. I want people to live fulfilling lives, free from the weight of their struggles.
